At last a fishing trip out of Weymouth that I have been able to get out on after eight cancellations for health and weather. With only 6 anglers on board we left Weymouth at 8.00 am with a light wind from the northwest, high thin cloud and bright sun. We sailed out to the edge of the Shambles Bank and started feathering for Sand eels, but they were few and far between (a hint of what lay ahead). After a couple of poor drifts we anchored up and tried for Bream and with the skipper saying that he had been very successful the day before we got stuck in, but as usual the phrase ’we should have been here yesterday was soon muttered’. The skipper then decided to have a try for Bass and we headed inshore to east of Portland Bill, but again after three fruitless drifts and nothing to show for our efforts we abandoned this idea and we moved back to the east marker buoy on the Shambles and began drifting for Turbot. After about 15 minutes I hooked into a nice 5 lb Turbot and shortly after Clive had a nice 7 lb Turbot. On the next drift Jai then landed a 7 lb Turbot with Mike getting a 2 lb Brill and Bob also a 2 lb Turbot. Again this was another disappointing day’s fishing and you could sense the unrest amongst the other anglers. I think next year we may be struggling to fill the places. My tally for the day was I Turbot, 1 Gurnard, I Pouting and 3 Dogfish.

Saturday 29 October -  Offshore Rebel  -  Dropped Out due to Injured Hand

Saturday 20 November -  Offshore Rebel  -  Cancelled

In all this was a terrible year for me with only one trip possible.  The fishing had not been that brilliant with small catches amongst the other anglers (gone are the days of stocking up the freezer on one trip).  The Bass were late in arriving and it was early November before their numbers picked up, but unfortunately our trip was cancelled for weather conditions.

Paul Whittall did try his best to get the anglers on the fish, but there have been better years.  Any way a big thank you to Paul  and Jai for  their efforts and also for  Paul’ s efforts in filling the regular vacancies on each trip.  Finally a big thank you for keeping his rates cheaper than the other Charter Boats
